Canada
Piper is sitting on her bed, talking to Brad on Skype.
PIPER: So, it's called the Calgary Stampede, and basically it's just a rodeo- fest where middle- aged men can be cowboys and party like they're still under- age.
BRAD: Sounds like fun!
PIPER: Yeah, I thought you'd like it! So I got you a cowboy hat...(looks around)...if I can find it...anyway, I thought you could wear it during your fourth mid- life crisis!
BRAD: I hadn't realised I'd reached one to three yet.
PIPER: You...please! What about the phase with the deep V T- shirts? Or my personal favourite - the frosted tips!
There is a bit of a pause.
PIPER: Dad...
BRAD: What?
PIPER: You called me, remember? And I doubt it was to hear your daughter pay you out. Something's up. Please don't tell me it's another long- lost child, our family tree is confusing as it is.
Brad is having trouble getting the words out.
BRAD: Your mother and I...we've...we've separated.
PIPER: Like..."separated" separated, or separate rooms? I mean, how much do I need to be saving for therapy, Dad?
BRAD: It's serious.
PIPER: You know, you should come here next year, we can go to the rodeo together.
BRAD: Piper...
PIPER: No, Dad, it's no big deal, this happens all the time - you and Mum fight, Mum moves out, you make up, all back to normal, it's not big deal.
BRAD: It's different this time.
PIPER: What, you forgot to buy the milk?
Brad pauses.
BRAD:(with difficulty) ...I slept with someone.
PIPER: Lauren.
BRAD: How did you know?
PIPER: Yeah, the kiss in Adelaide, yeah, OK, it's a natural progression, I guess.
BRAD: I didn't know you knew about all that...who told you?
PIPER: Does it matter?
BRAD: OK, I want you to know that you kids are my priority, OK, you come first.
Piper is silent.
BRAD: Piper, come on...talk to me.
PIPER: What do you want me to say?! Look, I've got a concert tonight, and I need to start getting ready for it, so sorry I can't be having a D&M with you right now, Dad.
BRAD: I never meant for anyone to get hurt, alright...relationships...they're complicated...
PIPER: How are you doing?
BRAD: Don't worry about me, OK? You should give your mum a call.
PIPER: I'll see if I can fit it in between the concert and therapy.
BRAD: I love you.
PIPER: Yeah.
BRAD: I'll call you tomorrow.
PIPER: Mmm- hmm, yes, sure.
He blows her a kiss, and then the call ends. Someone puts their hand on Piper's shoulder in comfort.
In Australia, Brad just sighs.
